The Li River corridor between Guilin and Yangshuo is one of the most photographed river landscapes in the world: a 65-km sweep of conical karst (limestone landscape eroded by water) peaks rising from a flat mirror-bend water surface. Best viewed at dawn from a slow bamboo raft or from Xianggong Mountain overlook, when low mist pools in the bends and the limestone glows pink. About 100 km north of Guilin, the Longji (Dragon's Backbone) terraces are hand-built rice paddies climbing from 300 m to 1,100 m elevation, cut into the hillside by Yao and Zhuang minority communities over 700 years. The water-filled paddies in late May act as mirrors; in late September they turn gold at harvest. The Seven Stars with Moon viewpoint is the most-photographed angle, best at 6-8 AM after a rainy night when the contours reflect in still water.
The Lingqu Canal, built in 214 BC under the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC, China's first unified empire), is one of the oldest navigable canals still in use. It connects the Yangtze (China's longest river, roughly 6300 km) and Pearl River systems (the two longest river basins in southern China) and is a UNESCO-recognized feat of ancient engineering. Visitors can walk a section near Xing'an and see the original stone dam, the lock gates, and the slow barges that still use the route.
Most photographers' classic Guilin shot: climb 30 minutes before first light to watch the Li River bend unfurl below a sea of low mist and conical karst peaks. Best at 6-7 AM in Apr-Oct when the river is at low flow and morning fog pools in the bends.
Drift downstream on a hand-poled bamboo raft through karst-walled bends, with the boatman standing at the stern. Shoot from the raft mid-morning (9-11 AM) when side-light rakes the limestone cliffs and the water mirrors them cleanly.
Climb to the Seven Stars with Moon viewpoint for the most photographed view of the Yao and Zhuang terraced paddies spilling down the slope. Best at 6-8 AM after a rainy night, when the water-filled paddies act as mirrors and reflect each contour line.
Board an evening boat tour through downtown Guilin's linked lakes and canals for the lit-up pagodas and bridges reflected in still water. Best at 19:30-21:00 in clear weather, when reflections stay sharp and crowds thin after the first hour.
Walk 20 minutes from Xingping Wharf along the riverbank to the famous Li River horseshoe bend, backdrop of the CNY 20 banknote. Best at 7-9 AM and again at 16:00-17:30 in autumn when side-light warms the karst cones.
The 4-5 hour bamboo-raft cruise from Zhujiang or Mopanshan pier to Yangshuo is the iconic Guilin experience: glide past cormorant fishermen, river cliffs, and water-buffalo meadows while the boatman poles downstream. Best boarded 9-10 AM so the raft is backlit by midday sun and the limestone glows.
Catch the Zhang Yimou-directed outdoor performance on the Li River just downstream of Yangshuo: 600 local actors, a 2-km river stage, and 12 mountain backdrops. Best attended at the 19:30 sunset show in Apr-Oct when light and music align.
Rent an e-bike from Yangshuo West Street and loop the Ten-Mile Gallery (Shili Hualang) past Moon Hill, the Big Banyan Tree, and riverside villages. Best in late afternoon (16:00-18:00) when the karst cones cast long shadows across the road.
