The scenic shuttle bus winds through thousands of limestone karst peaks, stopping at General Peak for the iconic view, Eight Trigrams Field for geometric rice paddy patterns, and the Ridgeline Trail entrance for a 3.6km hike above the clouds. Buy combined tickets at the gate (70 yuan entry plus 50 yuan shuttle). Half-day is enough to cover the highlights.
Pick up a free electric bike at the village entrance and ride through the most scenic countryside in Guizhou. Wind through narrow paths between rice paddies, past vegetable plots, fish ponds and small streams. Stop at any of the cozy countryside cafes for a coffee overlooking the fields — the sunset views over the karst peaks are unforgettable. No plan, no schedule, just slow-paced rural exploration.
The one dish you cannot miss at Wanfenglin is egg fried rice on Yicui Street. Simple ingredients, extraordinary flavor — every grain of rice separate and fragrant, wok hei smoky aroma, 10 yuan per bowl. Beyond the famous rice, try Xingyi goat meat noodles, steamed rice noodles, and the colorful Buyi five-color glutinous rice for a full taste of local flavors.
Drive up to the Jade Emperor Summit before dawn and wait for the sunrise over the sea of clouds and karst peaks. The road to Yunshang House cafe is narrow and winding but the view from the top — thousands of limestone peaks emerging from white clouds like islands in a heavenly sea — is worth every hairpin turn. Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise for the best light.
The loop-line sightseeing bus runs the front half along the mid-mountain ridge with full panoramic views of Wanfenglin's scenic points, and the back half descends through Naihui Village and across the fields. Each viewing platform offers a different vista. Great for older travelers and children.
Classic check-in points include Jiangjun Feng (General Peak), Zhongxing Pengyue (Stars Cradling the Moon), Jinxiu Tianyuan (Brocade Fields), Liuliu Dashun Feng, Bagua Tian (Eight-Trigrams Field) and Fuzi Tian (Fortune-Character Field). Below the forest of peaks, rice fields stretch to the horizon.
Navigate to Cloud House (Yun Shang House), the best viewpoint where you can see the whole of Wanfenglin. With good luck you can see a rolling sea of clouds. The mountainside cafe has great views and is very photogenic, like drinking coffee while touching the clouds.
A water castle with a fairy-tale feel. The mountainside Fuyao Coffee shop is the best place to look down on Jilong Fort. You can also enter the Wanfeng Lake scenic area and take a boat tour for a different angle of the lake and the fort.
About ten minutes by car from the city, you can see spectacular waterfalls. July and August are the high-water season when the waterfall cluster is most spectacular, praised as the most beautiful scar on Earth. The author even encountered two beautiful rainbows.
Inside the scenic area, first walk the Lingfeng boardwalk hiking line, about 3.6 km, taking 2 to 3 hours, descending at Bagua Tian (Eight-Trigrams Field). Then take the sightseeing bus to continue the loop tour. Looking down on Wanfenglin from the summit at sunset is beautiful.
Rent an electric cart and ride slowly through the fields, deeply feeling the slow-living atmosphere. You can catch fish in the rice fields, pick dragon fruit, visit the morning market, swim in the open-air pool, and stop at atmospheric cafes with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the rice fields to chase the sunset.
Be sure to go to Egg-Fried-Rice Street to taste Wanfenglin's signature dish, egg fried rice. About 10 yuan fills you up, with distinct, fragrant grains, showing how simple ingredients can be cooked into a delicious local specialty.
It is recommended to fly directly to Xingyi Wanfenglin Airport, then rent a car for a self-drive tour, which is more convenient. Most scenic points are outdoors, so prepare insect repellent and sun protection and wear breathable outdoor clothing.
