Zhaoxing Dong Village is the largest Dong ethnic settlement in China, founded in 986 AD. The UNESCO-worthy destination sits at the juncture of Guizhou, Hunan, and Guangxi, spanning 18 km2 with over 1,200 households and 5,200 residents. Its iconic Five Drum Towers embody a millennium of architectural and cultural excellence.

Worth one night if you want an accessible, comfortable base to see Dong drum towers and terraced fields and don't mind the tourist-town packaging — but if you came to Guizhou for something raw and untouched, I'd skip the ticket and head to one of the smaller free villages nearby instead.

亮点

The Five Drum Towers (the 'wu da gulou' named for Confucian virtues), the wind-and-rain bridges, and the wooden Dong architecture are the real reason to come — this is a genuine centuries-old Dong village, not a reconstruction.

Go up to the back-hill panorama platform and the field-side viewing deck for the best angles over the tiled rooftops and the Tang'an terraced paddies just outside the village.

The nightly Dong Grand Choir (dong da ge) performance is worth timing your evening around, and the local food is cheap and good — sticky rice and grilled pork skewers in particular.

It photographs beautifully after rain and on a clear night the star-viewing spots above the village are genuinely dark — worth staying overnight rather than day-tripping.

It's heavily commercialized — the main lanes are wall-to-wall shops, bars, printed-fabric stalls and photo-rental studios, and locals themselves admit it's gone the way of every other 'old town.' If you want raw, untouched Dong villages, Huanggang, Basha or Zhaoxing's smaller neighbors are quieter.

The bars run loud until around 11pm, so pick lodging away from the main strip if you want to sleep.

Value is a common complaint: ~CNY 80 ticket plus a CNY 10-20 shuttle, and everything inside runs pricier than usual — several repeat visitors said they wouldn't pay to come back.

Weather is a real factor — it gets genuinely cold at night even in shoulder season, summer can be hot and crowded, and there were reports of flooding after heavy rain, so check conditions before you go.

Five Drum Towers

Five iconic drum towers — Zhi (Wisdom), Ren (Benevolence), Yi (Righteousness), Li (Propriety), Xin (Trust) — stand along the main street. Each named after a core Dong value, these towers represent the soul of Dong architecture and community life. Built between 1983 and 2005, they remain the living heart of the village.

Viewing Platform Panoramas

Perched on the east side of the village, the Viewing Platform offers the most complete panoramic view of the entire drum tower complex. Sunrise mists and sunset golden light create mirror-like reflections across the traditional wooden rooftops. Arrive early for the best shots.

The Eight Villages One Mountain cultural hiking route covers 34 km2 encompassing eight ancient Dong villages and the sacred Sasui Mountain. The route showcases terraced rice fields, traditional wooden houses, and an unspoiled rural landscape that changes dramatically with the seasons.
