综评

Worth a stop if you are already walking Pingjiang Road, especially in mid-March or late September. Skip if you have only one garden slot in Suzhou — go to the Humble Administrator's or Lingering Garden first. Photographers and garden enthusiasts will find more to study here than first-time visitors will.

亮点
The east garden's yellow-stone rockery is the standout feature — reviewers consistently call it one of Suzhou's finest
Magnolia blossoms through the lattice window in March and the osmanthus courtyard in late September are the two seasonal moments visitors plan around
Half the size and a fraction of the visitors of the headline gardens, so the atmosphere stays residential rather than performative
要注意
Smaller than expected — most visitors finish in 60-90 minutes and wish they had combined it with a longer Pingjiang Road walk
The famous magnolia window is locked in most recent years; visitors now view the framed blossoms from the walkway outside, not through the open window
Very limited English signage inside the garden; printed map or guide app recommended

A Couple's Retreat Garden

Built in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) by provincial judge Shen Bingcheng and his wife Yan Yonghua, a published poet, after his political exile. The name Ou (a Chinese word for 'pair' or 'companion') doubles as a pun on 'couple' and on the old farming image of two oxen plowing side by side. The compound is split into eastern and western gardens linked by a covered walkway, mirroring the couple's life together.

The Yellow Stone Rockery

On the east side sits one of Suzhou's finest yellow-stone rockeries, a stack of massive weathered blocks quarried from the lakeside cliffs of nearby Lake Tai. The rocks are layered around a central rectangular pond and climbed via a narrow upper path that gives the only elevated view of the garden.

Magnolia Through the Window

In March a two-toned magnolia (pink-white blossoms on the same branch) blooms directly behind a wooden lattice window on the east side. Photographers frame the blossoms inside the window for a traditional Chinese 'painting-within-a-painting' effect. The window is locked in most recent years, so the view is now captured from the walkway outside at a distance.
