这里到底是什么

Hangzhou's West Lake city walk links classical gardens, Song-era alleyways, and lakeside paths into a one-day loop on foot or by shared bike. Most of the route is open-air public space with free access; only a few garden sites charge a small entry.

Worth it, and honestly the free part — walking the shore and sitting by the water — beats the ticketed attractions; go for a slow half-day in spring, autumn, or light rain, take the metro not a car, and start early. If you only have a rushed, sun-baked afternoon or you're chasing the empty postcard shots, skip it or come back another season.

亮点
Sitting by the water for a whole afternoon is the actual draw here, not any single photo spot — people show up in a bad mood and leave calm. Budget unhurried time on a bench over ticking off landmarks.
Season makes or breaks it: spring and autumn (leaves turning) are when visitors said it looked its best, and misty rain gives you the classic Jiangnan look. Overcast flat-light days leave the lake dull and greyish.
Beishan Road's plane-tree avenue and the Quyuan Fenghe lotus gardens give you the leafy lakeside walk, while Hefang Old Street's Song-era lanes are the compact old-town stretch — you can string them along the shore on foot.
Night around the lake pulls its own crowd, with Leifeng and Baochu pagodas lit up across the water — worth staying past sunset if you can.
要注意
Parking is a real headache and pricey — visitors flagged 30 RMB/hour and self-drivers openly asking where to even leave the car. Take the metro to Longxiang Bridge instead of driving in.
It gets packed. One person literally asked 'are we even at the same West Lake' after seeing empty photos — the serene shots are early-morning or off-season reality, not weekend reality. Go at opening or skip the peak.
Weather is a coin flip that decides your whole visit: an overcast day means flat, un-blue water and people came away underwhelmed. If the forecast is grey, I'd push it to another day.
The paid add-ons are skippable. The boat to the Three Pools island runs ~55 RMB and Leifeng Pagoda is ~40-55 RMB with people saying there's little to see inside — the lakeside walk itself is free and the better experience.

Hop-on hop-off lake tram around Su Causeway

Sudi (Su Causeway) is roughly 3 km long; shared bikes are restricted on holidays, but a hop-on hop-off sightseeing tram runs the full length. Board anywhere along the causeway, pay on board, and save legs for the gardens at either end.
