Hong Kong Island Tram and Harbor Walk

Hong Kong Island tram and harbor walk from Kennedy Town to Tsim Sha Tsui.

What it actually is

A one-day urban stroll across Hong Kong Island, starting at Kennedy Town, crossing through Sai Ying Pun, Central, and Causeway Bay, and ending with a Star Ferry crossing to Tsim Sha Tsui. You'll ride the iconic 'ding-ding' tram, capture classic flyover photo spots, catch harbor sunsets, and explore street-level neighbourhoods — all mostly free and easy to hop on and off.

The verdict

Worth it if you like wandering a city slowly and cheaply, and want a genuine slice of old Hong Kong rather than a checklist sight. Ride the HK$3 tram, walk the Kennedy Town waterfront and Admiralty flyover, and don't expect much beyond that. I'd skip it if you're short on time, chasing big-ticket landmarks, or only came for the staged photos, and I'd avoid any pricey 'open-top' tram pitch.

What's great
The whole point is the ding-ding tram: HK$3 flat fare gets you two-plus hours of slow, upper-deck rides from Kennedy Town to Causeway Bay, and it beats any tour bus for soaking up the old Hong Kong street feel.
Pay as you go without fuss: Octopus, Alipay, and cloud-pay QR all work, and kids 3-12 ride half price, so you don't need to sort out cash or a travel card before you go.
Board at the back, pay when you get off at the front, and just ride the full line east to Causeway Bay if you want the longest stretch for the money.
Kennedy Town's waterfront (the seaside basketball court and tree-framed spots) and the Admiralty flyover give you street-level angles on the city and the three big bank towers lined up together, all reachable on foot along the tram route.
Worth knowing
Those picture-perfect Kennedy Town shots are heavily set up: people report you need the tree-shaded framing to keep the buildings from leaning, and without it the photos come out crooked. Go in expecting a normal seaside street, not the edited version.
The tram is slow and gets confusing if you're not used to it. Route maps like Amap don't show tram lines, people get lost figuring out which westbound car to take or where to get off, and any westbound tram works but the signage won't hand-hold you.
Watch out for tourist-trap pricing on lookalikes: the standard tram is a few HK dollars, but some visitors got charged 200 RMB per person for an 'open-top' version. Stick to the regular green tram.
It's a fair-weather, low-key outing. On a hot or rainy day the slow open ride loses its appeal, and if you want fast sightseeing or big landmarks this isn't it.

Good to know

Get an Octopus card for seamless travelOctopus is Hong Kong's reusable smart card; buy at any MTR station (HKD 50 deposit) and top up at convenience stores or station machines. It works on trams, the Star Ferry, and most buses. Cash is also accepted but exact change is required on trams.
Start early for the best photo lightPopular photo spots like the Kennedy Town basketball court and Admiralty flyover are quietest before 10 AM. Sunset at Victoria Harbour peaks at 17:30–18:30 (Nov–Mar); arrive 30 minutes early to secure a good spot.
Mind the tram tracksTrams run close to footpaths and have right of way. When crossing streets or pausing for photos, always look both ways and stand clear of tracks. Trams brake slowly, so never assume they can stop quickly.
