What it actually is

Hong Ya Dong is a cliff-side historic district in Chongqing with 11 floors of stilted architecture above the Jialing River. Founded as a Warring States military post in 316 BC, it grew through Ming and Qing dynasties. Rebuilt in 2006, became an AAAA attraction in 2007 and viral landmark in 2018. Free entry, open 09:00-23:00, metro accessible.

The verdict

Worth one evening if you want the classic gold-lit riverside skyline and some street food — go after dark once the lights are actually on, shoot from the far bank, and expect crowds. I'd skip it if you hate packed spaces, get lost easily, or are hoping for much beyond the night view.

What's great
The 11-story stilted building lit up gold at night really is the shot everyone comes for — from across the Jialing River (the far bank, near Qianximen Bridge) you get the full facade instead of just the base you see up close.
Entry is free, no ticket or reservation, and it stays open till 23:00 — so you can show up late, after the lights are on and the daytime tour crush thins slightly.
Levels 4 and 5 are a solid stop for Bayu-style Chongqing street food, so the visit doubles as a meal rather than just a photo op.
The layered, multi-entrance structure is genuinely unusual — you walk in on one level and exit on a street several floors up, which is half the fun if you lean into it.
Worth knowing
It is packed, consistently — multiple visitors describe waiting a long time just to get a clear view and still only photographing the backs of people's heads. Come on a holiday or peak evening and you'll be shoulder to shoulder.
The lights don't come on until well after dark, and in summer the sky isn't black until past 20:00 — several people waited until 19:00 or 19:30, saw nothing lit, and left disappointed. Check the daily light-on time before you plan your evening.
The layout is a maze. People report circling for an hour unable to find their way out, even when they can see the road right across from them. If you're bad with directions, budget extra time and don't drive here.
Honestly, a chunk of visitors came away underwhelmed — 'not really that fun,' 'waited the same time, not worth it,' 'been once, never again.' Outside the night facade there isn't a lot to do, so manage expectations.

11-Story Stilted Architecture

The defining feature of Hongyadong is its dramatic cliff-side stilted construction — 11 wooden floors cantilevered over the 79m cliff face, connected by outdoor escalators and narrow alleys. The structure mimics traditional Bayu stilted buildings techniques at a scale found nowhere else in China. At night each level glows independently, creating a real-life version of Bath's Roman Baths crossed with a Shinto torii gate.

Night View of Jialing River

Hongyadong faces the Jialing River confluence with the Yangtze (China's longest river, roughly 6300 km), and the riverside promenade directly across the water is the classic photo vantage point. The layered lights of the building stacked 11 stories high with the modern CBD skyline behind it have become the definitive image of 4D cyberpunk Chongqing.

Bayu Culinary Street (Levels 4 & 5)

The 4th and 5th floors are dedicated to authentic Chongqing cuisine. Try the Zhiyan River bar street for craft beer with river views, or the Hongyadong Food Street for mapo tofu, spicy noodles, and the legendary Yandiao hotpot brand that originated in this neighborhood.
