The verdict
Worth the trip if you want genuine, unfiltered mountain-and-water scenery and you're willing to build a 4-5 day plan around it from Chengdu; go early and off-peak to dodge the crowds. Great for families and photo-focused travelers. I'd skip it if you're on a tight budget or short on time, since the transport and two-part entry cost add up and a rushed single day doesn't do the Y-shaped valley justice.
What's great
The three headline stops earn their reputation: the Five-Color Pool really does hold those turquoise-to-jade tones in person, and Nuorilang Waterfall plus the Shuzheng cascade give you water scenery back-to-back without much walking between them.
The colors are real, not a filter. Visitors keep posting straight-out-of-phone shots and confirming the water looks like that with no editing, so don't assume the photos you've seen are faked.
The Y-shaped valley runs on an eco-bus (included in the CNY 90 bus fee) that hops you between the three branches, so you cover a lot of ground in a day without hiking the whole thing.
Autumn is the standout season here for the foliage-plus-water combo, but mid-July still delivers full, vivid color if summer is when you can go.
Worth knowing
Last entry is 14:00 and the park closes at 18:00 (17:00 in winter), so a late start wastes the ticket. Get in early, both to fit the full valley and to beat the tour-group crush at the famous pools.
It's not cheap: CNY 220 for the ticket plus CNY 90 for the mandatory eco-bus in peak season, before you add the Chengdu-to-Jiuzhaigou transport and lodging that eat most of a multi-day budget.
Most people arrive on packaged tours from Chengdu, and the popular no-shopping small-group tours book out fast in July-August. Free-and-independent is doable but you're organizing long mountain transfers yourself.
The signature spots get packed. At peak times people describe not even being able to frame a wide shot of the Five-Color Pool for the crowds, so it's least pleasant midday in high season.

Nuorilang Waterfall
Nuorilang is China's widest calcified cascade at 320 m across and 24 m tall, its travertine (calcium-carbonate rock formed by spring deposits) terraces built up over thousands of years. The upper deck, reached by a 10-minute uphill walk past the main platform, gives an unobstructed view; best light falls between 13:00 and 15:00 when the afternoon sun cuts through the spray.
Shuzheng Lakes terraced cascade
The Shuzheng Valley runs 13 km through 19 terraced lakes linked by small waterfalls, all formed where travertine barriers built up across the original stream. The lower trail looking up the cascade is the most photographed angle, especially after the first frost in late October when the surrounding maples and birches turn gold and crimson.
