What it actually is

A full-day city walk route through Guiyang's most atmospheric streets, starting at the century-old North Cathedral, winding through the creative alleys of Yantang Street, grazing the bustling food stalls of Minshan Road, pausing at the elegant Jiaxiu Pavilion overlooking the Nanming River, and finishing with the electric nightlife of Qingyun Market.

The verdict

Worth a day and a half if you're here to eat your way through Guiyang and don't mind a food-and-market walk over marquee sights; skip it if you came for grand landmarks or want a smooth, well-signposted route, and don't drive.

What's great
The 48-hour loop through here actually works: pair the citywalk (Jiaxiu Pavilion, Yantang, the night market at Qingyun) with Qianling Park for the macaques and a cable car up the south gate the next morning. Do the walk in that order and you're not backtracking.
This is a food-first walk more than a sights walk. The draw is the street eating along Minshan Road and the hot pot spots (sour-soup beef, bean-rice), not the architecture. Come hungry and treat the buildings as scenery between meals.
Qingyun Market at night is the real anchor of the whole thing. It holds up even if you're just wandering and not eating, and prices are reasonable rather than tourist-inflated.
Go on a weekday. Weekend and holiday crowds turn the panda viewing at Qianling into a 2+ hour queue, and the food streets get packed enough that the small stalls sell out.
Worth knowing
Jiaxiu Pavilion is overrated. It's a quick photo from the outside and that's it, no reason to build time around it, so don't expect the postcard to match the visit.
Parking is a genuine problem and the fees are steep, so don't drive here if you can avoid it. Walk or use transit between stops.
The stalls and small shops keep their own hours and many don't open until midday, so an early-morning arrival will leave you standing in front of shuttered doors on torn-up streets. Some of the spots people rave about are hard to find or gone entirely.
At Qianling Park the macaques will grab food and bags right out of your hands, so keep snacks zipped away. Combined with the hills, it's tiring, and pairing it with a lot of walking the same day will wear you out.

North Cathedral

A century-old French colonial church on Guiyang's north side. Its mismatched architectural styles — Romanesque arches, Chinese roof tiles, stained glass — make it uniquely Guiyang. The side steps offer a dramatic upward angle; inside, afternoon light through the colored glass is ethereal. Arrive before 10 AM to have it almost to yourself.

Yantang Street Creative Block

The most Instagram-rich block in Guiyang. Pingan Xiaoguan dazzles with its rainbow-colored desserts, San Ke Dao Library has a caramel-brown loft with velvet green sofas perfect for retro film photography, and Agou Garden is a yellow cottage with bear murals. Shops here are mostly open from 2 PM onward.

Minshan Road Street Food

A legendary food alley where every stall has a cult following. Wok-grilled rice cake (guoba jituzi) is crispy outside and chewy inside. Bathroom-shaped buns (ceshi mantou) are curiously delicious. Egg-wrapped mashed potatoes (danbao yangyu) is the ultimate comfort snack. Cucumber milk slushie is the perfect palate cleanser between savory bites.

Jiaxiu Pavilion

Guiyang's defining landmark: a three-story wooden pavilion from the Qing Dynasty standing on a rock island in the Nanming River. The classic photo is taken from mid-bridge looking upstream. The adjacent Cuiwei Garden has red walls and antique windows perfect for traditional Chinese composition shots. Open 9:00–18:00, free, closed Mondays.

Qingyun Market Nightlife

Where Guiyang's night energy peaks. The main building has three floors of Guizhou snacks and trendy bites. Side streets explode with neon bar signs and live music. There's even a cat street with small cafes. Bring a notebook — there are Guizhou-themed souvenir stamps to collect. Open until late, most lively after 9 PM.

Old Street Architecture

Between major landmarks, the route passes through undersea-era residential streets where old Guiyang life is still intact — clothes hanging from balconies, hand-painted shop signs, elderly locals playing chess under hollowed buildings. These transitional moments are part of what makes this walk feel like a real neighborhood traverse rather than a tourist circuit.

Local Desserts & Drinks

Guiyang has a rich dessert culture. Try the bayberry ice slush (waxberry slush, seasonal), purple rice fermented drink, and the signature sour and spicy hot soup base that defines Guiyang flavor. Many drinks shops on Yantang Street offer free tastes before you commit.
