Kunming City
Kunming, Yunnan's capital, is famed as the Spring City for its year-round mild climate and scenic lakes.
What it actually is
Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, sits at 1,890m elevation on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Known as the Spring City for its comfortable year-round temperatures, it serves as the economic and cultural heart of Southwest China with excellent air quality and scenic mountain-lake landscapes.
Editor's take
Worth a full day if you time it for winter and like a laid-back, walkable city with good food and a big lake — but I'd tell summer visitors chasing the seagull shots to lower their expectations or plan around the wetlands instead, and anyone treating it as a one-night hop to Dali should either commit a real day or skip past it.

Kunming's Eternal Spring Climate
Kunming's altitude of 1,890 metres creates a remarkable year-round temperate climate averaging 16-18°C, earning it the moniker Spring City. Summers stay below 26°C without humidity, while winters rarely drop below 5°C. This makes Kunming comfortable to visit in every season, unlike most Chinese destinations.
Dianchi Lake Sunset & Seagulls
The vast expanse of Dianchi Lake, Yunnan largest lake, transforms into a romantic canvas at sunset. From November to March, thousands of black-headed gulls migrate here, allowing visitors to feed the birds against a backdrop of golden water and distant mountains. The lake is easily reachable by metro and makes an ideal half-day outing.
Historic Kunming & the Tea Horse Road
Kunming was a key staging post on the historic Tea Horse Road trade route connecting Yunnan to Tibet and beyond. Remnants of this heritage survive in the old streets and markets, where mule caravans once gathered. Today Kunming preserves this legacy through museums and restored historic quarters that recount the city's ancient commercial significance.
