What it actually is

A free-entry karst basin in Zhenning County that travelers call 'Anshun's mini Guilin'. Stone pinnacles rise from open cattle pastures with no fences, no tour buses, and no formal trails. Easy drive from Anshun city and a natural half-day pairing with Yunfeng Tunpu.

The verdict

Worth an hour or two if you're already in the Anshun area and you actively like slow, unpolished village culture — the stone-built Bouyei architecture and the quiet meadows are the real draw. But if you're chasing scenery on the level of Huangguoshu, skip it; you'll wonder why you came. I'd only send people who value history and atmosphere over spectacle, and I'd tell them to go in spring and sort out their own transport and meals first.

What's great
A real Bouyei stone village at ~1,800m elevation — stacked stone walls and slate roofs set in a karst valley, the kind of lived-in vernacular architecture you don't see in the polished old-town circuit.
It stays genuinely quiet. Most people who go remark on how few tourists there are, so you can walk the meadows and pastures with cattle and horses around without fighting a crowd.
Effectively free — there's only a CNY 10 sanitation fee, no real entry ticket, which is rare for a designated national traditional village.
Spring is the payoff: go in rapeseed-and-cherry-blossom season and the valley genuinely delivers without any filter needed. Summer is greener but flatter visually.
Worth knowing
Manage your expectations hard — this is a quiet old village, not a scenic spectacle. Several visitors flatly called it the least interesting stop and said 'there's nothing inside.' If you want drama, you'll be let down.
Photos oversell it. Locals joke the real place is 'the pictures divided by two.' The best shots come from a hillside behind the village, not the village itself — the ground-level reality is more modest.
Getting there and around is a question mark. People repeatedly ask how to cab in from Anshun and whether cars can drive inside, so plan your transport ahead rather than winging it.
Thin on visitor services. Lodging, food, and whether you can even book a homestay come up constantly with no clear answer — don't count on eating well or staying overnight without arranging it in advance.

Free-Form Karst Meadows

The trail has no fixed path. Travelers consistently compare this karst (limestone landscape eroded by water) basin to a 'mini Guilin' for its tower-peaks rising out of flat green meadows. Walk past the entrance campground sign toward the inner folds; the deeper you go, the more dramatic the stone silhouettes become against the pasture.

Pasture Wandering with Cattle and Horses

Unlike a manicured scenic area, Gao Dang lets cattle, horses, and sheep roam through the same meadows. Bring a wide-angle lens and sit on a stone: the unhurried livestock, the rustle of long grass, and the distant karst pinnacles together feel like an open-air breath after the noise of the city.

Untouched, No Entry Fee

There is no formal ticket booth. Drivers pay a flat CNY 10 sanitation fee per person at the campground and that is it. The lack of paved paths, signboards, and tour buses is exactly what travelers chasing quiet secret-realm landscapes are looking for.
