The verdict

Worth it if you come for the cableway, the cave arch, and a real cliff-edge walk — and if you go early to beat the crowds and check the weather first. If you're badly afraid of heights, the glass skywalk will wreck you and the top cableway isn't optional, so I'd think twice. Not built for anyone frail or shaky on long stairs; the crowds and closures will punish a rushed, unplanned visit.

What's great
The cableway up is the real headline — one of the longest in the world, and it climbs from town straight into the cliffs. Even people who hate the glass walk say the ride and the view of Tianmen Cave were the part worth showing up for.
The 999-step climb to Tianmen Cave (the natural arch punched through the mountain) genuinely lands in person — this is the one spot where visitors stop arguing about filters and just say it looked like the photos.
If you have the legs for it, the full loop trail along the cliff edge is long but rewards you — people who walked the whole big loop, including the switchback corner, were the ones who came back happiest.
The glass skywalk delivers exactly the scare it promises. Some come off it shaking; a few barely felt it and wished it were longer. Either way it's a real experience, not a photo op.
Worth knowing
Crowds are brutal at peak times. Plenty of people gave up waiting for the escalators inside the mountain and walked instead until their legs gave out — go early or expect to queue.
The pink-flower, dreamy shots you've seen are heavily edited. There is no pink bloom to chase; several visitors showed up expecting it and were let down. Judge the place on the cliffs and the cave, not the filtered photos.
Weather makes or breaks it. On a bad day you're standing in cloud with nothing to see, and it's a long trip to waste — check the forecast for Zhangjiajie before you commit.
The A/B/C route system confuses people, and sections close without warning (the top cableway station and A-line access have both been shut at times). Sort out your route and which parts are open before you buy tickets, especially the timed C-line.

World-Record Cableway Ascent

The Tianmen Mountain city-to-summit cableway is the world's longest passenger cable car at 7,455 m, lifting visitors from the city-side station at 230 m to the summit at 1,430 m in about 28 minutes. Each cabin carries up to 8 passengers and the route passes three intermediate towers on the way up, with karst cliffs visible through the floor panel in the final third of the ride.

Cliff-Hugging Glass Skywalk

The Guigu Plank (Ghost Valley Plank) is a 1.6 km boardwalk bolted to the west peak cliff face at 1,430 m altitude, with three short glass-floor sections and the remainder open-grating steel above a sheer drop. Most visitors walk the full length in 90-120 minutes one way, with a turnaround at the Tianmen Cave transfer point.

Tianmen Cave Natural Arch

Tianmen Cave (tianmen dong, Heaven's Gate Cave) is a 131.5 m high, 57 m wide natural karst arch formed when a 263 m deep sinkhole collapsed through the mountain during the Eastern Han dynasty (25-220 AD). The 999-step staircase descending through the arch is the most-photographed section of the route and is visible from the cable car during the final minute of descent.
