An off-the-beaten-path Miao village loop from Kaili to misty rice terraces, ancient temples, and indie artisan markets.

What it actually is

A two-day self-drive loop south of Kaili, about 120 km, that swaps the crowded Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village for quieter villages perched above terraced fields, a 600-year-old cliff temple complex, and an indie non-heritage craft market with quick access from Guiyang.

The verdict

Worth it if you'll rent a car with decent clearance, pick one village, and go on a clear weekday — it's for travelers who want real Miao country and Guizhou food over polished tourist sites. If you're coming without transport, on a rainy stretch, or expecting somewhere big and easy, I'd skip it.

What's great
The old timber architecture around Feiyunya carries a real weight of age — one small museum tucked in the back rows actually explains the Miao festivals and customs, which is more than most 'ethnic village' stops bother to do.
The sour-soup fish and hotpot here are the real thing. Locals will tell you it tastes better inside Guizhou than anywhere you'll get it outside the province, and after eating it I believe them.
Go on a clear day and the light does the work no filter can fake — the villages and the three-tier waterfall hike look completely different under sun versus grey.
These are genuinely small, off-the-crowd stops. Pick one village and do it properly on a single day rather than trying to chain them all.
Worth knowing
The roads in are rough. I've heard of sedans scraping their undercarriage on the way to the villages, so if you're not in something with clearance, expect to walk the last stretch in.
It rains constantly — three days out of every few here seem wet. A soggy day flattens the whole point of coming, so build in buffer days.
Word has gotten out and the popular spots now get car-jammed and shoulder-to-shoulder on weekends and holidays. The 'hidden' part is fading fast.
Getting around without your own wheels is a pain. Public transport is thin, parking in the hill towns is miserable, and most people end up driving or hiring a car.

Kaili Hidden Miao Loop

Two-day self-drive or chartered-car loop from Kaili old town south to Wudong Miao Village, Baiyan Village and Xiangshuiyan Waterfall on Day 1, then west to Xiuli Tao craft market and Feiyunya cliff temple on Day 2. Mornings are for misty rice terraces, afternoons for waterfalls, evenings for the village fashion show. Recommended start: 08:30.

  1. 1

    Wudong Miao Village· 1.5-2 hrs

Wudong (a small, still-living Miao village) is the magic stop at dawn - terraced fields sink into cloud sea and old wooden stilt houses (raised wooden-frame homes on pillars, a Miao architectural tradition) catch the first light. No entrance fee.

Drive ~32 km south from Kaili old town, ~50 min on winding mountain road.

  2. 2

    Baiyan Village· 1.5-2 hrs

Baiyan (White Rock Village) is a quieter, greener rice-terrace village with one slow lunch spot - Hua-jie Miao family kitchen serves suancai ji tang (Miao sour-cabbage chicken soup, a Qiandongnan staple made by fermenting local paddy-field cabbage) and home-brewed rice wine.

Drive ~5 km from Wudong, ~15 min; follow signs for Xiangshuiyan.

  3. 3

    Xiangshuiyan Waterfall· 2-3 hrs

Xiangshuiyan (Echoing-Water Cliff) is a three-tier waterfall reached by a 30-minute uphill hike from Kaili Power Supply Bureau training field; the second pool is the best swimming hole - cold mist, fern walls, no fence.

Drive ~15 min from Baiyan; park at Kaili Power Supply Bureau training field and walk up.

  4. 4

    Xiuli Tao Non-Heritage Market· 2-3 hrs

Xiuli Tao (Indie Treasure-Hunt Market) is the Qiandongnan craft hub open Fri-Sun 10:00-16:00 - browse Miao silver and batik, then step into Baopu cafe for a Miao rice-wine latte on the second floor.

Walk ~1.2 km from the Xiuli Tao market entrance to Baopu cafe.

  5. 5

    Feiyunya Cliff Temple· 1.5 hrs

Feiyunya (Flying Cloud Cliff, est. 1405 AD during the Ming Dynasty, 1368-1644) is one of the oldest cliff temple sites in Guizhou - stone archways and relief carvings are built into a karst (limestone landscape eroded by water) cliff face and glow when morning side-light hits.

Drive ~45 km west from Xiuli Tao, ~70 min on the G320 expressway.

Trending now

Wudong Miao Village at dawn

Wudong (a small, still-living Miao village about 32 km south of Kaili) stays nearly empty of tourists - just terraced rice fields sinking into a morning cloud sea and old wooden stilt houses (raised wooden-frame homes, a Miao architectural tradition) catching the first light. No entrance fee; best at 06:30-08:00 from late Sep to mid Oct when the rice turns gold.

Baiyan Village sour-soup lunch

Baiyan (White Rock Village) is the lunch stop on the loop - sit on plastic stools at Hua-jie Miao family kitchen for suancai ji tang (Miao sour-cabbage chicken soup, a Qiandongnan staple made by fermenting local paddy-field cabbage) and a glass of home-brewed rice wine. The village is wrapped in green terraces and quiet enough to hear roosters.

Xiangshuiyan three-tier waterfall hike

Xiangshuiyan (Echoing-Water Cliff) is a 30-minute uphill walk from the Kaili Power Supply Bureau training field; the second of three pools is the one travelers actually swim in - cold mist, fern walls, no fence. Bring creek-walking sandals; the rocky path is rough after rain.
