What it actually is
Zhenyuan Ancient Town, a 2,200-year-old river settlement on the Wuyang River in Guizhou's mountain country, blends Han, Miao, and Dong cultures in its lantern-lit stone alleys, cliff-hanging temples, and 300-year-old stone bridge — all free to enter and best explored over one to two nights.
Editor's take
Worth an overnight if you're already in eastern Guizhou and want river-town atmosphere, good cheap food, and a genuinely pretty night scene — but skip it if you're chasing untouched ancient authenticity or trying to squeeze it into a rushed daytime stop, and don't bother in July or August.

Wuyang River night cruise past lantern-lit facades
The signature Zhenyuan experience: a 40-minute boat ride from Yumen Wharf starting 30 minutes after sunset, when the white-washed houses, Kuixing Pavilion, and the southern Shipingshan slope glow in warm yellow against the dark water. The night cruise (CNY 80) is what locals and repeat visitors recommend; the daytime version (CNY 60) is cheaper but the magic is in the lights.
Qinglongdong, the cliff-hanging temple complex
Built into the north cliff face over 600 years, this three-religion complex (Taoist, Buddhist, Confucian) is often called one of China's three great 'hanging monasteries.' The wooden pavilions cling to the rock and the trail winds through connected halls with river views. Allow 1.5-2 hours; entry CNY 60.
Zhusheng Bridge, the 300-year stone gateway
A seven-arch Qing-dynasty stone bridge (1722) with the three-tiered Kuixing Pavilion at its north end — Zhenyuan's most photographed landmark. The blue-hour reflection in still water is the postcard shot; the bridge is free and open 24 hours.
