What it actually is

The 47-hectare restored imperial core of Luoyang's Sui-Tang capital (founded 605 AD), centered on the Yingtianmen gate, Mingtang Hall, and Jiuzhou Pool — now a heritage park where illuminated Tang-style towers recreate the 'Divine Capital' skyline at night.

The verdict

Worth it as a night-photo and live-show destination, not as a history museum. Come after dark for the lit Yingtianmen (shoot the free exterior angle before deciding to pay in), and skip the full-price interior if you're chasing real artifacts. Great for photographers and anyone into hanfu and Tang atmosphere; if you want authentic relics, go to the Luoyang Museum instead and don't bother with the combo pass.

What's great
The Yingtianmen gate lit up at night is the reason to come. Even people who've been to Luoyang many times single out the illuminated flying eaves and towers as the moment that lands. Time your visit for after dark.
You don't actually need a ticket for the signature shot. The best angle on Yingtianmen is from outside the paid area, for free, and locals will tell you the exterior night view is the whole point.
This is theater as much as sightseeing. There's a large-cast live show reenacting Wu Zetian's Tang-dynasty court inside, and the reconstructed Mingtang and Tiantang halls are built to photograph, so come dressed for it (hanfu fits the setting).
If you catch it under snow in winter, it's a different experience entirely. A few visitors said a heavy snowfall was what made the trip worth it.
Worth knowing
These are modern reconstructions, not ancient ruins. Repeated complaint: almost no real artifacts inside, so paying full price to go in feels like buying a ticket to a paid observation deck. If you want genuine relics, the Luoyang Museum is the better spend.
The full-price combo pass (around CNY 90-120) is widely called not worth it unless you're specifically there to shoot photos. Several people would only pay to go in for the interiors, not the history.
The area around it is congested. A local who passes daily just calls it a traffic mess, and the walk between Yingtianmen and Mingtang crosses a live road rather than a clean pedestrian route.
Drone shots now require pre-registration. A lot of the jaw-dropping aerials you've seen were shot before the rules tightened, so don't count on flying one yourself.

Yingtianmen: A 1,400-Year-Old Gate Reborn

The reconstructed triple-arched main gate of the Sui-Tang capital (built 605 AD, original demolished 1930s, rebuilt 2019) stands 50 m tall with three tower pavilions over a stone-arched gatehouse. Walk under the central arch and you trace the imperial axis from Luoyang's south gate straight through Mingtang to the back palace — exactly the route Tang officials followed to audience. The Yingtianmen Metro station (Exit C2) drops you 220 m from the south plaza, and the night illumination (19:00-22:00) turns the gate into a golden wall that you can photograph across the still moat.

Mingtang Hall: Empress Wu's Tang Court

Mingtang was originally built in 688 AD by Empress Wu Zetian — the only female emperor in Chinese history — for her court ceremonies. The current reconstruction (2018) sits on the original foundation, an 88 m wooden-ring hall topped by a golden dome inspired by the Tang-era painting. From the south reflecting pool, the round hall mirrors perfectly at sunset, and the interior museum displays Tang tri-color ceramic fragments excavated from the site. Plan to arrive 17:00 for the golden hour light on the dome.

Hanfu Night Walk Under Lit Tang Towers

The single most popular way to experience the heritage park is to rent a Tang-style hanfu at one of the Lijingmen costume shops (CNY 80-200 for 2 hours) and walk the south plaza after 19:00. The illuminated Yingtianmen gate provides a backdrop that local photographers will frame for you in a CNY 100 night shoot. Book the costume ahead via social media to skip the queue, and bring your own hair accessories — shop supplies are basic.
