What it actually is

The Chuanxi Small Loop is a 600 km self-drive circuit in Western Sichuan's Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture that ascends from Chengdu to a 3,500-4,200 m plateau, threading Xinduqiao, Tagong, Moshi Park, and Mount Siguniang. Most travelers complete it in 3 days; photographers stretch to 5 for dawn shoots and Danba's Tibetan villages.

The verdict

Worth it if you can handle altitude and want three distinct high-mountain landscapes in one drivable loop; go in golden autumn or a clear shoulder-season window and pad your drive times. I'd skip it if anyone in your group struggles above 4,000 m, if you're set on going in the August rains, or if you want a relaxed low-effort holiday.

What's great
Three genuinely different landscapes in one loop: the 4,200 m Yuzixi viewpoint for Gongga's golden sunset, the black-slate alien terrain at Moshi Park, and the alpine lake at Mugecuo an hour out of Kangding. You're not driving all day for variations of the same peak.
Aim for the shoulder-season sweet spot. Clear-sky luck makes or breaks the sunset at Yuzixi, and golden autumn is when these peaks look their best. A blue-sky day here is the whole point.
Mugecuo is the low-effort payoff of the loop: a sacred lake about an hour from Kangding, so you get high-alpine scenery without committing to the highest, hardest passes.
It packs into a 4-5 day self-drive from Chengdu, which is how most people realistically do it and enough time to not feel rushed between the three stops.
Worth knowing
Altitude is the real gatekeeper, not the scenery. People get turned back by altitude sickness here, and with Yuzixi at 4,200 m it's a genuine risk for kids, older travelers, and anyone unacclimatized. Ascend slowly and don't book this if high altitude is a known problem for you.
The map lies about distances. Route diagrams show near-straight-line distances far shorter than the actual mountain roads, so budget real drive times, not what the map implies, or you'll blow your schedule.
Road and weather conditions swing hard by season. August is rainy season with landslide risk, and whether a normal sedan can handle the smaller loop depends on current road state. Check before you go and don't assume every stop is paved.
If you're driving an EV, plan charging carefully. Range anxiety on these high, remote stretches is real and charger coverage at your lodging isn't guaranteed.

Good to know

Carry enough cash for remote staysMany Tibetan guesthouses and small eateries in Tagong and Xinduqiao only accept cash; bring at least CNY 2,000 in yuan for the loop.
Book guesthouses early for Oct holidaysXinduqiao and Danba accommodation fills quickly during National Day (1-7 Oct). Reserve at least 3 weeks ahead via Ctrip or local contacts. In shoulder season, walk-ins are fine.
Layered clothing for -5 to 25 C swings
Bring portable oxygen above 3,800 m
Yak-meat hotpot warms cold evenings
Rent an SUV in Chengdu, avoid night driving

Chuanxi Small Loop: Chengdu, Xinduqiao, Moshi Park, Siguniang, Return

A 3-day, ~600 km self-drive loop starting from Chengdu, ascending via Kangding and Zheduo Pass to Xinduqiao on the Litang Plateau, looping north through Moshi Park and Danba before turning south to Mount Siguniang and returning to Chengdu. Best in May or late September to mid-October when the poplar forests turn gold and the passes are clear of snow. Recommended start: 07:30.

  1. 1

Kangding city start, Zheduo Pass ascent· Day 1: drive 5-6 hr

Depart Chengdu early; by lunchtime reach Kangding (2,560 m) for a hot Sichuan lunch and start acclimatizing. The afternoon climb up Zheduo Shan (Zheduo Pass, 4,298 m, the first major altitude gate west of Kangding) takes 1.5 hours; stop at the prayer-flag viewpoint at the summit for 15 minutes. Descend to Xinduqiao (Xinduqiao Town, 3,460 m, a photographer's hamlet) for the night.

Drive ~325 km from Chengdu to Xinduqiao via G318; expect 5-6 hr including the Zheduo Pass climb.

  2. 2

Xinduqiao, Tagong Grassland, Moshi Park· Day 2: 8 hr drive with stops

Sunrise shoot at Xinduqiao's poplar avenue (golden hour around 6:30-7:30 AM in October). Then drive 1.5 hr north to Tagong Grassland (Tagong Caoyuan, a vast 100 sq km pasture beneath Mount Yala) and visit Tagong Monastery. Continue north on G350 to Moshi Gongyuan (Moshi Park, the alien-rock landscape of black slate); spend 2 hours on the loop trail. Overnight in Danba (1,900 m).

Drive ~280 km from Xinduqiao to Danba via Tagong and Moshi Park; 8 hr including stops.

  3. 3

Danba to Siguniang Mountain via Xiaojin· Day 3 morning: 5 hr drive

Morning drive south from Danba to Mount Siguniang (Siguniang Shan, four peaks above 5,000 m nicknamed the 'Queen of Sichuan's Mountains'); the G303 scenic road threads the Dajin River canyon with autumn colors in mid-October. The Shuangqiao Gou (Double-Bridge Valley) sightseeing bus loops 30 km of glacial valleys; plan 3 hours inside.

Drive ~190 km from Danba to Siguniang; 5 hr with photo stops.

  4. 4

Maobiliang viewpoint, return to Chengdu· Day 3 afternoon: 4 hr drive

After the valley, drive 20 km back east on G303 to Maobiliang (a roadside viewpoint framing all four Siguniang peaks). Arrive 30 minutes before sunset for the alpenglow (best at 6:00-7:00 PM in Oct when the granite faces catch the last light). Continue 4 hours east to Chengdu via Dujiangyan; expect to arrive by 9-10 PM.

Drive ~280 km from Siguniang back to Chengdu via Maobiliang and Dujiangyan; 4 hr.

Yuzixi (a 4,200 m viewpoint for Mount Gongga golden sunset)

Yuzixi (literally 'Fish Play', a windswept grassland viewpoint at 4,200 m) faces Mount Gongga (Minya Konka, 7,556 m, Sichuan's tallest peak). Golden hour around 5:30-6:30 PM in October paints the peak copper as prayer flags snap in the wind. The platform is a 15-minute walk from the parking lot; arrive 30 minutes before sunset to claim a front-row spot. Best at 5:30-6:30 PM in October when the air is clear and the grasslands turn gold.

Moshi (Moshi Park, an alien-rock landscape of black slate)

Moshi Gongyuan (Moshi Park, an otherworldly formation of black slate eroded by wind and rain into jagged ridges and spires) sits between Daofu and Bamei, a striking contrast to the surrounding green pastures. A 1-hour loop trail leads to the main ridge; the surface is loose and slippery in rain. Plan 2 hours and arrive before 10 AM to avoid afternoon haze. Best at 9-11 AM when side-light rakes the rocks and casts deep shadows.

Mugecuo (a sacred alpine lake an hour from Kangding)

Mugecuo (literally 'Wild Lake', a sacred alpine lake at 3,700 m an hour's drive west of Kangding) sits inside a national scenic area along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. The trail threads hot springs, a 'Seven-Color Grassland', and a 3-km boardwalk along the lake shore. The still water reflects the surrounding fir forests on calm mornings; afternoons bring katabatic winds off the glacier. Plan a half-day; the entrance ticket plus shuttle costs roughly CNY 100.
