What it actually is

Chongqing's Yangtze (China's longest river, ~6300 km) Cableway is a working urban cable car that lifts passengers 50 m above the river on a 1.1 km crossing between Yuzhong and Nan'an districts. Since 1987 it has functioned as transit and the city's most photographed 8D infrastructure: the cabin threads the Raffles City cantilever.

The verdict

Worth it once, especially if you pair it with Hongyadong and Jiefangbei on a half-day loop. Go on a clear weekday morning or at sunset from the South Station to skip the worst queues. Skip it entirely if the forecast shows heavy fog or rain: the cabin windows turn opaque and there is nothing to see. Photographers chasing the Baixiangju angle should manage expectations: the exact spot is closed by residents and access is chance-based.

What's great
The 4-minute crossing genuinely threads the Raffles City cantilever: no other urban transit in the world does this
Board from the South Station to cut the queue in half and end with the sunset skyline view
Costs about CNY 30 one-way, the price of a coffee, for a once-in-a-lifetime frame
Worth knowing
Weekend queues can run 2-3 hours at the North Station
Fog and rain ruin the ride: windows turn opaque and the river below disappears
The classic Baixiangju photo spot is closed by residents, so do not plan your trip around it
Cabins get crowded and sway at peak: if you are prone to motion discomfort, take it slow

Trending now

A cable car that doubles as city transit

Built in 1987 before the first bridge crossed the Yangtze (China's longest river, ~6300 km) here, the cable car was Chongqing's working commuter lifeline, not a tourist attraction. Locals still call it their 'old flying bus,' and many residents in Nan'an district keep a transit card specifically for the cable car.

Threads the Raffles City twin towers

The 4-minute, 1.1 km crossing lifts you 50 meters above the river and the cable wire passes directly through the cantilever of the Raffles City complex, the sail-shaped twin towers on the north shore. There is no other working public transit in the world where the cabin physically threads a skyscraper's frame.

Best at golden hour from the South Station

Local-rider tip: board at the Nan'an South Station on Shangxin Street rather than the Yuzhong North Station. The queue is roughly half as long and you finish the crossing with a frontal sunset view of the Yuzhong skyline. Take Metro Line 6 from Shangxinjie Station back to Yuzhong afterward.

The classic Baixiangju photo angle

The most famous photo spot is at Building 4 of Baixiangju on the Nan'an side, with the cable car cabin crossing through the middle of the residential block. The original exact spot is closed by residents, but the cafe at the innermost end of the block sometimes opens the rooftop in the evening.

Fog and rain ruin the ride

Heavy fog or rain turns the cabin windows opaque and the river below disappears. On clear autumn days the visibility is exceptional; in winter, fog is common after sunrise. Plan for late morning on a clear day if you want the photo, sunset if you want the experience.

Crowded but cheap by Western standards

CNY 30 for a one-way ticket and CNY 50 round-trip, about the price of a coffee in most Western cities. The catch is the queue: weekdays 15-30 minutes, weekends and holidays up to 2-3 hours. Weekday mornings before 9 AM or after 8 PM are the easiest windows.

Pairs with Hongyadong and Jiefangbei

The cable car, the Hongyadong stilt-house complex on the Jialing River, and the Jiefangbei pedestrian zone make a natural half-day loop on the Yuzhong side. All three are within 1.5 km of each other and accessible by Metro Line 1 or 6.
