Longmenhao Old Street
Free heritage lane on Chongqing's south Yangtze bank — restored late-Qing townhouses and a calm Hongya Cave alternative.
What it actually is
Longmenhao Old Street sits on the Yangtze (China's longest river, ~6,300 km) south bank in Nan'an District, Chongqing. The lane mixes restored late-Qing and Republic-era townhouses with the Guanhai Langyue archway and the leafy Xiahaoli courtyard next door — free, walkable in two-to-three hours.
Editor's take
Worth the trip if you want a riverside Chongqing experience without the Hongya Cave crowds; I'd skip the midday slot — the bridge and lane light-up after about 7 PM is what makes the visit memorable. Photographers and slower-paced couples will like it most; travelers chasing big performance shows or kitsch street theater should look elsewhere.

Guanhai Langyue archway
The symbolic gateway on the upper terrace — pass through the moon-shaped arch and the Dongshuimen Bridge (Dongshuimen Daqiao, a 1,000-meter Yangtze (China's longest river, ~6,300 km) crossing that lights up at night) slots into the frame for free.
Lane of restored late-Qing facades
Some 200 Republic-era (1912-1949) and late-Qing (1644-1912) townhouses line the flagstone slope — local guides point out the carved brickwork on the brownstone walls.
Lane lights come up at dusk
From around 7 PM warm street lamps pair with the bridge lights across the river; the old street stays uncrowded after 9 PM, a much calmer spot than Hongya Cave (Hong Ya Dong, the stilted riverside complex across the river).
Lane of restored late-Qing facades
Around 200 facades from the late Qing (1644–1912) and Republic eras (1912–1949) line the flagstone slope — keep an eye out for the carved brickwork on the brownstone walls.
