Hangzhou's West Lake
A 6.4 sq km classical lake ringed by pagodas and causeways, free and open 24 hours a day.
What it actually is
West Lake (Xi Hu) is a UNESCO Cultural Heritage lake shaped over a thousand years of dyke-building and temple-sitting. The 6.4 sq km basin hosts three causeways, ten classical 'scenes' (Shi Jing) and is free to enter.
Editor's take
Worth the time on any Hangzhou itinerary: pick a weekday morning, rent a public bike, and loop the Su Causeway; skip the cruise dock. For photographers, target the Huagang maples in November; for atmosphere, walk the west causeway at sunset.

Three Pools Mirroring the Moon
Three stone lanterns stand in the south lake, breaking reflections into perfect circles. Best shot from the boat to the islets (San Tan Yin Yue), late afternoon when the water goes glass-still. Take a hand-rowed boat, not the cruise.
Autumn maples at Flower Harbor
Huagang Guanyu (Flower Harbor to View Fish) lights up red in early November. The stone arch framing the maple tunnel is one of the most-photographed compositions in Hangzhou. Arrive 9-11 AM on weekdays.
Hand-rowed boat at dusk
The classic boatman experience is the 1.5-hour hand-rowed trip out to the Three Pools islets; ask the boatman to take the southern route for the best sunset reflections.
