Tiger Hill of Suzhou
Suzhou's oldest hilltop site with a 1,000-year leaning brick pagoda, ancient sword pool, and Ming-era gardens.
What it actually is
Tiger Hill (Huqiu) is Suzhou's most iconic historic hill: a 30-meter rise crowned by Yunyan Pagoda, a seven-dynasties brick tower tilted 2.43 m since 1648. Sword Pool below hides a supposed ancient king's tomb; Ming-era scholar gardens frame the gates. April-May and October are the mild windows; June plum-rain and October ginkgo peak seasons.
Editor's take
Worth the CNY 70 for anyone doing Suzhou more than a day. Pick April-May, June plum rain, or September-October ginkgo. Skip if you can't handle a 30-meter hill and several kilometers of stone paths, or if you're only in town for a single afternoon.

Yunyan Pagoda, the Pisa of the East
The hill's soul is Yunyan Pagoda (Huqiu Tower, the so-called Pisa of the East) — a seven-story brick tower begun in the Five Dynasties (907-960) era, roughly 1,000 years old and tilted about 2.43 m from vertical since 1648. Visitors trace the lean from the Thousand-People Rock platform below. Local guides repeat a story: Su Shi (Su Dongpo, 11th-century Song Dynasty (960-1279) poet) once wrote that any trip to Suzhou without seeing Tiger Hill counts as half a visit missed.
Sword Pool, the tomb of King Helu
Jianchi (Sword Pool) sits in a narrow cleft between two cliffs. Legend says the pool covers the burial of King Helu of Wu (ruled 514-496 BC, one of the Spring and Autumn (770-476 BC) period kings), entombed with 3,000 swords. The two characters carved on the cliff face are attributed to the Tang Dynasty (618-907) calligrapher Yan Zhenqing (Tang Dynasty (618-907), 618-907 AD). The atmosphere is hushed and damp — water never dries.
Yixie Garden, a Ming-era scholar's retreat
Yixie Yuan (a quiet waterside pavilion garden, part of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) scholar tradition of small intimate gardens) at the northern gate is the easiest first stop: white walls, dark tiles, a pool of water lilies and koi, and a clean view of Yunyan Pagoda reflected on still days. Photographers consistently rate it as the best soft-light stop inside the gate, especially 9-11 AM in late spring.
