Two days of Miao-style stilted houses, river lanterns, and fire shows in a 26°C Guizhou mountain valley.
Wujiangzhai International Tourist Resort, in Bozhou District of Zunyi, is a recreated Miao and Buyi mountain village along the Wujiang River. Stilted timber houses, covered bridges, lantern alleys, and raft rides fill the day; drones, fireworks, single-bamboo rafters, and bonfire dancing take over after dark.
Go for one photogenic evening of lanterns and the night show — but if you want a genuine old town with real residents and street life, somewhere like Qianhu Miao Village will feel far less staged.
Day 1 covers the Miao craft village and craft workshops along the Wujiang River from Zunyi Station; day 2 is dedicated to the Hueilong Island night program with drones, fire dances, and bonfire dancing, then a slow morning raft ride from Taiyi Wharf on the second day. Recommended start: 13:00.
Pick up the resort shuttle bus at the east square; the ride is about 60 minutes and costs CNY 30 — DiDi is the faster fallback at around CNY 70.
Train from Guiyang or Chongqing, ~1.5 to 2 hours
Drop bags at the in-resort guesthouse — staying inside the resort waives the CNY 120 entry ticket and unlocks night-show access after 8 PM.
Shuttle or DiDi, ~60 min from Zunyi Station
Cross the Taiyi and Yaluwang corridor bridges to see the river and stilted-house panorama from above; best photography is the blue hour at 6:30-7:30 PM.
Walk ~600 m along the riverside lane from the east gate
Two hands-on workshops on the same lane: press dried flowers into handmade paper at Wuzhi Fang, then dye a small cotton square at Heping Indigo.
Walk ~400 m north along the alley
After 8 PM the plaza hosts drone light shows, fire-tree fireworks, single-bamboo rafters, bonfire dancing, and the fire-spitting parade — arrive by 19:30 to grab a riverside bench.
Walk ~300 m from the workshop lane to the plaza
Next morning, board a hand-rowed wooden boat at Taiyi Wharf for a slow loop under the covered bridges; mist rises off the river around 7:30 AM.
Walk ~200 m from the guesthouse back to the wharf
Optional day-2 add-on (90 min drive each way): Asia's longest cave system with a heart-shaped emerald lake and a cliffside cafe perched over the gorge.
Drive ~90 min from the resort to Shierbeitou
The two covered bridges — Yaluwang and Taiyi — frame the Wujiang River with stilted timber houses on both banks. Photographers time their visit for the 6:30-7:30 PM blue hour, when the rice-terrace pools start to mirror the lanterns. The resort pulls its design vocabulary from Bozhou District Miao and Buyi architecture (China's southwestern minority wooden pile dwellings).
Each evening more than 300 drones lift off above the Hueilong Island plaza, paired with the 'Tree of Life' fireworks and a fire-spitting parade. The full cycle runs about 30 minutes and is included with the resort ticket. Arrive by 19:30 to grab a riverside bench before the 8 PM start.
About 90 minutes west of the resort, the Shierbeitou cave system hides a heart-shaped emerald lake inside Yinhe Cave and Asia's longest gypsum cave network. A cliffside cafe sits over the gorge for a slow afternoon coffee. Best photography light falls between 10-11 AM before tour buses arrive.
